Two St. Thomas students were robbed at gunpoint early Sunday morning near Portland and Prior avenues, according to a Public Safety alert issued Sunday.
The report said the two students were walking south on Prior Avenue with two friends who do not attend St. Thomas around 1 a.m. when they were approached by two men, one of whom reportedly had a handgun. After one of the men pointed the gun at three of them individually, one woman handed over her wallet and two others handed over their purses.
The two male suspects ran south on Prior Avenue and got into a black SUV before reaching Summit Avenue.
Sophomore Joey Puk said he is a little worried about safety around campus.
“To be honest, I’m a little concerned, especially off campus around Prior and Marshall,” Puk said.
Freshman Tony Vo said he thinks students should be prepared to do what they have to do in a dangerous situation.
“You have to give up your stuff, no matter what. Even if that thing’s not loaded. You can’t tell. There’s nothing you can do,” Vo said.
Sophomore Grace Huier said she has felt safe until recently and carries pepper spray to protect herself.
“There’s been kind of a lot of those stories,” Huier said. “I thought I was (safe), but now I wouldn’t go anywhere by myself at night.”
There was no Public Safety representative available to answer questions.
