Police clashed with protesters for a second night in the Minneapolis suburb where an officer who authorities say apparently intended to fire a taser, not a handgun, fatally shot a black man during a traffic stop.
Brooklyn Center police chief, Tim Gannon, described Sunday’s shooting and death of 20-year-old Daunte Wright as an discharge. The shooting sparked protests and unrest in an area already on edge because of the trial of the first of four police officers charged in George Floyd’s death.
All classes and events at St. Thomas were cancelled starting after 5pm Monday evening following Governor Tim Walz’s announcement of a 7pm to 6am curfew Monday night for Minneapolis and St. Paul.
St. Thomas President Julie Sullivan expressed the St. Thomas community’s devastation in an email Monday, urging students, faculty, and staff to seek support and be compassionate to one another.
Multiple people including a police officer were shot Monday at a high school in the east Tennessee City of Knoxville, authorities said adding that the scene had been secured.
The Knoxville police department tweeted that authorities were at the site of the shooting at Austin-East Performing Arts Magnet High School. The online posting said a Knoxville Police Department officer was reported among the victims.
Bob Thomas, superintendent of Knox county schools, tweeted that authorities were gathering information about the situation and that additional information would be provided later.
The U.S. is recommending a pause in administration of the single-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 Vaccine to investigate reports of potentially dangerous blood clots.
U.S. federal distribution channels, including mass vaccination sites, will pause the use of the Johnson & Johnson shot. The other two authorized vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer make up the vast share of COVID-19 shots administered in the U.S. and are not affected by the pause.
More than 6.8 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine have been administered in the U.S., the vast majority with no or mild side effects.
