A law enforcement official has told the Associated Press that investigators are looking into whether the S-U-V driver who plowed through a Christmas parade in suburban Milwaukee was fleeing from a crime.

At least five people were killed and more than forty injured. One person was taken into custody after authorities say a Waukesha police officer opened fire to try to stop the vehicle.

President Joe Biden announced this morning that he’s nominating Jerome Powell for a second four-year term as federal reserve chair. Powell oversaw the economy through a brutal pandemic recession in which the fed’s ultra-low rate policies helped bolster confidence and revitalize the job market.

In backing Powell, Biden brushed aside complaints from progressives that the fed has weakened bank regulation and has been slow to take account of climate change in its supervision of banks.

In local news, the United States Department of Agriculture Office of Tribal Relations has announced that it will partner with several native-led organizations on projects to raise awareness of indigenous perspectives about food and agriculture.

Minneapolis-based North American Traditional Indigenous Food Systems will develop recipes using traditional indigenous foods and foods provided to tribal communities through the Federal Emergency Food Assistance Program, according to co-founder and executive director Dana Thompson.
