The man who exchanged gunfire with a St. Paul Police Department officer on Thursday near the University of St. Thomas campus died from a head wound on Friday, according to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner identified the man as 24-year-old Brandon Daleshaun Keys, of Maplewood.

The BCA also identified the officer who exchanged gunfire with Keys as Officer Michael Tschida. Tschida was placed on standard administrative leave after the shooting.

According to the press release:

A woman reported to the police that Keys, who had a gun, was repeatedly hitting the car she was in with his car.

Keys got out of his car and approached the woman’s vehicle when the woman stopped at Marshall and Cretin avenues, where Tschida arrived and ordered Keys to get on the ground.

The two exchanged gunfire. Keys was shot in the head and Tschida was shot in the leg.

Both were taken to Regions Hospital where Tschida was released later that day.

The woman was not hurt.

Tschida was wearing an activated body camera. Footage from the camera will be used in the investigation.

The BCA will report its findings to the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office once the investigation is complete.
