As students settle in for their second full week of classes, some of you might be wondering, “So what exactly is there to do when I’m not in class besides ice cream socials and parties where cops always show up uninvited?” Well, here are a few of the most anticipated campus events scheduled this weekend, which starts on Thursdays if you haven’t figured out by now… freshmen.

Thursday: Jason LeVasseur, 9 p.m. at Scooter’s

New to campus this year, Thursday Night Live is a weekly series of live entertainment hosted by STAR, which takes place at Scooter’s in the lower level of the Murray-Herrick Campus Center on – you guessed it – Thursday nights. This week, STAR welcomes musician Jason LeVasseur to the stage. Students can expect a set filled with mostly cover songs, some original tunes and a few attempts at humor.

A Nashville, Tenn., native, LeVasseur sings and plays guitar and harmonica. His covers include the likes of Oasis and Green Day, while his own material maintains a steady acoustic rock vibe. LeVasseur has brought his one-man show to college campuses throughout the Midwest, always trying his best to get students involved in the performance. At the least, his light-hearted lyrics and familiar melodies will keep the show upbeat and the crowd humming along.

Friday: The Showoff Show, 6 p.m. at Scooter’s

On Friday evening, STAR will welcome another performance to Scooter’s, this time featuring The Showoff Show, which is made up of two guys who specialize in “interactive comedy.” The duo consists of a professional juggler and a comedian/cartoonist, so get ready to be pulled up on stage, laugh awkwardly and hope the dude tossing two knives and a bowling ball over his head is as “professional” as his Web site states.

The showoffs Evan Young and Jonathan Burns have taken their talents on the road since 2006, playing at universities, comedy clubs and festivals throughout the country. Their routine incorporates stand-up, contortion, pranks, stunts and a touch of magic. Certainly, this show will have something for everyone to laugh about. Whether that’s along with the showoffs or directly at them is up to you.

Saturday: Michelle Branch, 7 p.m. in South Campus parking lot

Remember back in 2002 when there was that brunette musician on MTV who reminded you of the girl who played a piano-on-wheels, but she rocked a guitar instead? She had that song that went “If you want to, I can show you. I can take you away from here.” Well, her name is Michelle Branch, and as TommieMedia announced last week, she will be playing a concert on South Campus this Saturday.

Branch began her rise to fame in 2001 with the single “Everywhere,” which appeared on the “American Pie 2” soundtrack. After that one hit No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100, a series of hit songs followed over the next few years (including “All You Wanted,” the song quoted above in case you didn’t know). Branch recently released a new song titled “Sooner or Later.” The track is the first single from her new CD “Everything Comes and Goes.”
