The Anderson Student Center doesn’t open until January 2012, but TommieMedia went on a guided tour Tuesday to see the building’s progress.
Each room in the student center has been framed. The lower level of the building will have sheetrock installed this week, and the other floors will get finished in the next few months.
“The lower level just got [sheet]rocked this week,” said Jim Brummer, St. Thomas construction manager. “There are a couple guys in bowling and dance, so this lower level is going to start rocking.”
Mary Ann Ryan, executive director of Campus Life, said she “loves” the new Scooter’s. A main reasons why is because one of two large pizza ovens in the student center will be in Scooter’s.
“It’s going to be great,” she said. “The whole place will smell like pizza – how delicious.”
The new Scooter’s will have more seating and games and a larger dance floor. Ryan said the design is based on student focus groups she conducted prior to the construction.
“When you walk into the building, it’s such a wow,” Ryan said. “But I think they’ll walk into Scooters and go ‘wow’ and walk into the Woulfe Alumni Hall and go ‘wow’ too.”
Brummer said the remaining windows should be installed and the exterior stone and roofing should be done by the end of May.
He added that the crew will be working on utilities, underground work, sheetrocking, flooring and the plaza area until the end of the semester.
“It’s all done in stages,” Brummer said.
Ryan said the Card Office, Personal Counseling Services, the Career Development Center and the post office will all stay in Murray-Herrick Center.
She said the following departments, offices and student clubs and organizations will move to the third floor of the Anderson Student Center:
- Dean of Students Office
- Multicultural Student’s Office
- Campus Ministry
- International Student Services
- Vice President of Student Affairs
- The Leadership Center (Undergraduate Student Government)
- Campus Life
- HANA
- Aquinas Yearbook
