Academic fraternity to start official chapter at St. Thomas

Sophomore Sarah Rumon began the process of starting a chapter of the actuarial science fraternity Gamma Iota Sigma at St. Thomas last year, and a chartering ceremony on Feb. 19 will mark the successful beginning of the newest academic fraternity at St. Thomas.

Approved by the university last December and by the grand chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma in January, the St. Thomas chapter is now set to become official. The chapter’s main goal, aside from raising awareness and student interest, is to begin planning events that will benefit students interested in careers in the insurance industry, according to junior Eric Schlicht, a Gamma Iota Sigma officer.

“The events that we’re trying to organize together are events that will help engage students in a smooth transition when they enter the workplace,” Schlicht said.

Gamma Iota Sigma is also planning a presentation on insurance-related careers in March as well as other events without set dates. The group plans to host social and community service events as well as educational events.

Rumon said she feels the organization of the new chapter has been successful, with around 70 students who are interested in joining.

“I’m definitely blown away by how many people are interested and how many want to be involved,” Rumon said.

Students who have helped get the chapter on its feet feel they have already gained something from the experience. Schlicht said he has never been involved with a group from its infancy before.

“It’s a unique experience and a great opportunity to explore the whole components of working together in a group, especially in the beginning stages where an end goal isn’t necessarily in mind,” Schlicht said. “Just creating different ways, different directions for the organization to go as a whole from the start.”

Actuarial science professor Thorsten Moenig, the chapter’s adviser, said he is pleased with how well the officers have handled the challenges so far.

“The whole chartering and recruiting process has been a very valuable experience for our new officers,” Moenig said. “Students generally don’t get that kind of organizational and leadership experience in college.

Moenig also said this experience will help the officers succeed in the workplace.

“The fact that they were able to get our chapter approved in such short time speaks to their dedication, enthusiasm and work ethic,” he said.

Another Gamma Iota Sigma officer, junior Jessica Kroeger, said she has discovered a lot through the fraternity about careers available in the insurance industry.

“Even if you do have a major, it doesn’t mean that you’ll be in that field of study,” Kroeger said. “You might change your mind or want to switch different subjects of the business, so it’s nice to spread that word to other students for them to find their way.”

The chartering ceremony will be held Feb. 19 at 5 p.m. in Woulfe Alumni Hall.
