A Macalester student was robbed at gunpoint Sunday evening at the intersection of Ashland Avenue and Saratoga Street.
According to a St. Thomas Department of Public Safety alert and the St. Paul Police Department, the student was walking to her off-campus house when she was approached by the suspect from behind at about 8:45 p.m.. The student reported that the suspect had a gun, and said, “Give me all your money. The student gave the suspect her purse, then fled south on Saratoga Street.
The student was not harmed.
The suspect was described as a 5-foot-10-inch tall African-American male with medium build and shoulder-length dreadlocks, wearing a black sweatshirt.
Steve Linders, a public information officer for the St. Paul Police Department, said that while incidents like this are rare, students should still make an effort to stay safe.
“Students should always be aware of their surroundings if possible. Travel in groups, or at least in a pair, and if something seems suspicious or if you feel uncomfortable, trust your gut and remove yourself from that situation,” Linders said. “Never be afraid to call the police department and report suspicious behavior.”
Anyone with information on the crime should call the St. Paul Police Department or Macalester Security at 651-696-6555.
