As the end of the year approaches, many seniors are busy preparing to graduate. Although most students graduate after four years, 20 percent return to St. Thomas for more classes after their senior year.
Still, the average time for a student to graduate at St. Thomas has been steadily decreasing.

More than 200 campuses across the nation have gone smoke-free, according to the American Lung Association in Oregon, and St. Thomas junior Ariel Kendall thinks it’s St. Thomas’ turn too.
On March 13, Westminster College in Missouri also decided to ban smoking from its campus.
Seniors face troubling job market, try to stay positive
St. Thomas’ soon-to-be May graduates are entering the job market at a tough time.
In February, the U.S. jobless rate held steady at 9.7 percent and 36,000 positions were cut around the country. Those numbers are lower than expected, signaling that the job market may be healing slowly.
Yearbook to keep paper edition, add digital copies
Some colleges around the country have decided to scrap their traditional yearbooks, blaming the age of Facebook and budget cuts.
The University of Virginia is the most recent school to join a growing group of colleges that no longer publish yearbooks as more students have decided to share memories through social networking.

Excitement building over Anderson Student Center
The Opening Doors Capital Campaign is more than $37 million short of its goal, but construction on the Anderson Student Center will begin on schedule, with the demolition of O’Shaughnessy Hall in March.
For several reasons, students and staff are excited about the new Anderson Student Center.
Alumni: Don’t expect free use of athletic center

Toyota recall not driving students back to dealers

Nationwide, 2.3 million vehicles, comprising eight models, have been recalled. Toyota’s Lexus and Scion brands are not included in the recall.
Phishing e-mails have hooked several accounts
Some St. Thomas e-mail accounts were compromised yesterday when phishing e-mails were sent from legitimate St. Thomas accounts.
The e-mail included a link that looked similar to that of St. Thomas’ Web application called Portal. When clicked on, the link brought users to a fraudulent site that was designed to look like the application.
Social host ordinance starts Saturday
The social host ordinance will go into effect this Saturday, Dec. 12, in St. Paul and it may change weekend plans for some students in the St. Thomas area.
John Hershey, St. Thomas’ neighborhood liaison, explained that the social host ordinance is intended to hold people responsible for hosting events where underage people are drinking, even if they don’t provide the alcohol.
“It’s to help close the responsibility loophole in hosting parties, and basically to hold people responsible who create the atmosphere for underage drinking and/or disruptive events,” Hershey said.
Commuter Center, USG prepare students for winter
Volunteers from the Commuter Center and Off-Campus Services and representatives from the Undergraduate Student Government passed out hot chocolate, ice scrapers and snow emergency information today in Lot H and in the Anderson Parking Facility.
