DELAWARE, Ohio – St. Thomas senior Mallory Burnham cleaned up Saturday in the final round of the NCAA Division-III Outdoor Championships, placing first or second in all three of the events she competed in.
Burnham won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.02 seconds, gaining 10 points for the Tommie women’s overall score. She beat second-place Sierra DeLeon of Kenyon College by .10 seconds.
Burnham said she was “in shock” after winning the hurdles, but she said it was a great way to end the season.
“It was anyone’s game out there to win, so when I crossed the finish line I kind of knew that I won, but I didn’t know for sure,” she said. “It still hasn’t really set in … right now I’m just super happy.”
The women’s 4×100-meter relay team of juniors Erika and Angela Tipp, senior Christina Rozeske and Burnham set a St. Thomas record with their 46.67 time, .59 seconds behind winner Wisconsin-La Crosse. The women were seeded ninth going into the championships, but their time placed them in second.
Burnham said it was “a little nerve-wracking” going into the championships for the relay.
“Going into finals we knew we could do a lot better than we had in prelims, so we just gave it our all and coming home with the second place is more than I could ever imagine,” Burnham said.
Burnham also placed second in the 100-meter dash in a photo finish, trailing winner Carly Fehler of Wisconsin-Eau Claire by .003 seconds. Her second-place finish grabbed another eight points for the Tommies.
“When I crossed, I had no idea what place I had,” Burnham said. “One of the officials brought us over to look at how close it was. Actually, my head was over first but they mark it for the torso … and hers was over. But I’m happy with that. I can’t complain about that.”
Assistant coach Aaron Lund said he “wasn’t surprised” by Burnham’s top finishes because she put in so much hard work throughout the season.
“The biggest thing I was telling the girls and my team is ‘you compete the best when it means the most,’” Lund said. “It’s a great feeling for them to have, and I know she really appreciates and enjoys having her teammates there.”
Junior Kayla Goeman also ran the 800-meter and placed eighth with a 2:17.66 time. Goeman was originally seeded 13th.
The St. Thomas women’s team finished in fifth place overall, with 27 points. Burnham contributed 26 points, and Goeman earned one for the Tommies.
