The No. 19 St. Thomas women’s soccer team extended its win streak to six Saturday at South Field, escaping a close match against Gustavus with a 2-1 overtime victory.
The Tommies (2-0 MIAC, 6-1 overall) allowed the Gusties (1-1-1 MIAC, 4-3-1 overall) to score late in the first period but were able to rally behind an explosive offense in the second.
“The first 15 minutes, we were on our heels,” Tommie coach Sheila McGill said. “But after that, we started to settle in and create opportunities.”
Gusties midfielder Abby Mullenbach scored the first goal of the game fate in the first period, giving them a 1-0 lead at the half.
McGill thought that halftime was a key turning point in the game. During the break she said the team “talked about playing with confidence instead of being on our heels and reacting.”
Tommie midfielder Kate Heimer agreed with McGill’s take on the game.
“I thought the first half wasn’t our best soccer, Heimer said. “But second half we definitely dominated and played our normal style and took it to them.”
Tommie forward Mallory DeBoom ignited the Tommies with a goal in the second period to tie the score at one which brought the game into overtime.
Fans didn’t have to wait too long to see how the extra period unfolded; Tommie forward Kaley Roberts scored the game-winning goal only 32 seconds into overtime.
Heimer is excited to build off of the lessons learned during the game.
“We will work on our shooting a little bit and focus on putting away our chances early in the game instead of waiting until we go to overtime,” she said.
The Tommies will look to continue their winning streak Sept. 24 at home against the Hamline Pipers (1-1 MIAC, 3-3-1 overall).
