I will be honest, it’s difficult for me to care much about the Super Bowl. The commercials, however, I live for. Between the taco dip, game day bets and halftime show, I religiously watch the million-dollar advertisements. You may have ranked the best plays in the game, but I listed my top five commercials.
1. Chrysler 200 “Detroit is Back”
Eminem made two appearances during the Super Bowl commercials. I will ignore his animated gaffe in the Brisk Ice Tea commercial and applaud his cameo in the Chrysler commercial. The commercial used the Detroit native’s “Lose Yourself” in the background with b-roll of the motor city’s landscape. The ad hyped the comeback of Chrysler during Eminem’s comeback to music, which is genius. Plus they used a gospel choir. Who doesn’t love a gospel choir?
2. Motorola Xoom “1984”
The Motorola Xoom is competition to the Apple iPad, so it was only fitting they mocked Apple’s original commercial inspired by George Orwell’s “1984.” The masses droning through an office in all white seemed to point to Apple’s clean and shiny style. It was also hard to miss the millions of white ear buds that looked remarkably like the iPod’s trademark headphones. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but I have a feeling Motorola used the ad as mockery instead.
3. Audi “Escape from Old Luxury”
Any commercial that has a cameo from Kenny G has to be hilarious. Audi’s commercial had every element of a humorous commercial. Old men jumping through windows? Check. A prison redecorated to appear as an upscale jail? Check. Jazz music piped through the commercial during an intense chase scene? Check. The concept of rich businessmen escaping from a luxurious prison was original. Using an Audi instead of a Mercedes Benz as a getaway car was effective and funny.
4. Chevy Cruz “Facebook Date”
I must admit, my admiration for this commercial is mostly based on the “aww” factor I experienced while watching it. A young couple part after their first kiss on a date, and the man gets into his Chevy Cruz. He uses OnStar to check his Facebook status, only to find his sweetheart had gushed about their date online. Cue the goofy, satisfied smile on the gentleman’s face as he drives away. “Awww.”
5. Groupon “Tibet”
Something seems so wrong about beginning a commercial with pleas to help a dying culture in Tibet, only to end the ad by praising Groupon for getting Tibetan food for half price. So wrong, but oh so right. I am a fan of the twist ending and irreverent humor. Groupon’s commercial fit the bill.

#5 was a miss for me, for the same reasons you are a fan of – and I am not. The commercial made it’s mark for Groupon – one way or the other.

You missed the Doritos commercials!
