Despite quarterback Alex Fenske being intercepted twice and sacked twice in the first half, the No. 18-ranked St. Thomas football team held a 7-6 lead over Augsburg College at halftime in Minneapolis.
Running back Jack Kaiser found an opening and broke loose for a 25-yard touchdown run on fourth and one, putting the Tommies up 7-0 with 3:53 remaining in the first quarter
Augsburg quarterback Ayrton Scott completed a 50-yard touchdown pass to Joey Sonnenfeld, but a failed PAT put the game at 7-6 with 14:09 left in the second quarter.
Kaiser rushed the ball seven times for 52 yards and one touchdown in the first half.
Midway through the second quarter, Fenske was intercepted by defensive back Paye Tengben, but the Tommie defense forced the Auggies to punt. On the following Tommie possession, Fenske’s pass was tipped and intercepted by linebacker Enrico Barrozo.
Scott completed six of 14 passes for 86 yards and one touchdown and also rushed for 87 yards on 11 attempts.
