Too cold to try and win a pie? Not for Tommies walking through the quad Monday night.

Students braved the bitter cold to try their luck at pumpkin bowling, an event put on by STAR.

The students had three opportunities to roll pumpkins towards 10 “pins,” which were canned cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie filling stacked two high. Those who successfully knocked down the pins won the opportunity to choose from an assortment of pies from pumpkin to Oreo.

“This is the first time this has happened on campus in at least the past 10 years,” STAR programmer Mo Berkowitz said. “We were looking to put on an outdoor event, and we thought this would be a nice quick event that would spread a little Thanksgiving cheer.”

Freshman Carl Willkom said he was happy he bowled despite the frigid temperature.

“This is my first experience doing this, and it was definitely worth it, especially since I was debating whether to get supper or not,” Willkom said.

Berkowitz was surprised at the turnout since it was so cold out. Many bowlers showed up and did very well, and almost all earned a pie.

“It was pretty intense,” freshman Dustin Sherrill said. “I just kind of threw it down to the end, and I didn’t even have to use the third pumpkin.”

Berkowitz said she could see STAR hosting another pumpkin bowling event in the future, but  “maybe when it’s not so cold out.”

STAR gave away 40 pies in the first 30 minutes of the event.
