Joe Callahan wins 2015 Gagliardi Trophy

Wesley College (Delaware) quarterback Joe Callahan was named the 2015 Gagliardi Trophy winner at a banquet Wednesday in Salem, Virginia, beating out St. Thomas offensive tackle David Simmet.

Callahan is the 12th quarterback, and third in a row, to win the award since its inception in 1993. The senior is just the second Wesley player to take home the Gagliardi Trophy after safety Rocky Meyers won in 2004.

A three-year starter for the Wolverines, Callahan won the award over Simmet, running back Sam Sura of St. John’s University and quarterback Matt Pawlowski of Guilford College (North Carolina).

Callahan was a finalist for the 2014 Gagliardi Trophy and guided the Wolverines to the NCAA quarterfinals, eventually falling to Mount Union. He’s a two-time First Team All-Region honoree and ended the regular season as the Division III leader in passing efficiency, passing touchdowns and passing yards.

Callahan threw for over 12,000 yards in his career and joined former University of Hawaii signal caller Colt Brennan as only two quarterback in all levels of college football to throw for 5,000 or more yards and 55 touchdowns in a season.

Simmet will help pave the way for a St. Thomas offense that will face a vaunted Mount Union defense in the Stagg Bowl Friday in Salem.
