The St. Thomas men’s soccer team tied Bethel University 2-2 Saturday at the South Campus field, while the women’s soccer team lost 1-0 to the Royals.

Men’s soccer ties in double overtime

The Tommies got an early lead with a goal from senior defenseman Kyle Mader.

But Bethel was able to score two goals on St. Thomas to grab the lead. Junior forward Mike Hutton tied the game back up with St. Thomas’ second goal of the day.

The game went into double overtime, but neither team was able to come through for the win.

Coach Aaron Macke looked at the positives.

“We’re coming off of a three-game losing streak, but in all of those games we came close to outplaying the other team,” Macke said. “Going into today’s game, we knew we needed to do all of the little things right. Unfortunately, there were a lot of missed opportunities to score, but you just can’t force the ball in.”

Coach disappointed with women’s loss

The Tommies beat Bethel 2-1 during their last meeting with Bethel back in September 2009, but they weren’t able to do the same this year. Coach Sheila McGill said she was disappointed.

“I don’t want to make excuses. They are better than us and played better than us today,” McGill said. “We need to start playing 90-minute games.”
