St. Thomas men’s basketball’s first-year guard Andrew Rohde was announced as a finalist for the Kyle Macy Freshman of the Year Award by College Insider last Thursday.
Rohde, originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is one of 25 finalists that are presented annually as the top freshman in Division I college basketball.
Rohde was the first Tommie in the program’s NCAA Division I era to earn the Summit League Freshmen of the Year Award and became the first rookie since the 2015-2016 season to earn a spot on the All-Summit League First Team.
The St. Thomas rookie led the team with 17.1 points per game, a .448 field goal percentage, 3.6 assists per game, 1.7 steals per game, a 1.6 assist-to-turnover ratio, and 33 minutes per game.
Rohde is ranked third in the country among all college rookies in points per game and seventh in field goal percentage. His 17.1 points per game are the most for a St. Thomas student athlete since the 2006-2007 season where former St. Thomas players Bryan Schnettler and Issac Rosefelt scored 19.9 and 17.9 points per game, respectively.
Rohde finished the season with 531 points, becoming the first Tommie first-year to ever score 500 in a season.
The Kyle Macy Freshman of the Year Award is named after the NBA player who played college basketball at Purdue University and the University of Kentucky in the 1970s and the 1980s.
After retiring, Macy worked many basketball-related positions, including coaching, managing and sports broadcasting.
In 1975, Macy won the Indiana “Mr. Basketball” Award for his talent playing high school basketball.
The recipient of the 2023 Kyle Macy Freshman of the Year Award will be announced in Houston during the NCAA’s Men’s Basketball Championship.
