The St. Thomas men’s track and field team competed at the annual Tomcat Twilight meet Thursday at O’Shaughnessy Stadium and Koch Diamond.
The Tommies competed individually in 19 different events against other teams, ranging from Division III to Division I.
The Tommies placed within the top three in 13 of their competitions. Freshman Eric Douville placed first in the 200 meter dash with a time of 21.81 seconds. Douville also finished second in the 100 meter dash. Junior Karl Wachter finished second in the 5000-meter dash with a time of 15 minutes and 2.22 seconds. 2019 weight throw national indoor champion Eric Holst placed second in the discus throw with a distance of 47.91 meters.
Freshman Noah Schultz only raced against one other person, but kept his focus to win his 400-meter dash heat against Hamline’s Jacob Prouty.
“It’s always hard when there is one other person. You’re kind of running alone and there is not that competitive mindset,” Schultz said. “I would have liked to have run faster and gotten out faster.”
Head coach Steve Mathre hopes the team keeps up their good work.
“We’re just looking to keep progressing. Given the weather and given the time of year, we’re not looking for personal bests, even though some of those will come,” Mathre said.
Competing at home is always a big deal for the Tommies.
“We’re just really proud to be on the St. Thomas track. Anytime we can compete at home there is a lot of Tommie pride that goes with it. It’s a great opportunity for our student-athletes,” Mathre said.
The Tommies will compete again at the Carleton Relays on Saturday, April 20 at Carleton College.
