Two second quarter touchdown passes totaling 101 yards from sophomore quarterback Griffin Neal to junior wide receiver Mark Whiting helped Concordia-Moorhead to a 38-31 victory over Augsburg on Saturday in Minneapolis.
(6-1, 4-1) over the Augsburg College Auggies (5-2, 4-2) 38-31 in Minneapolis, Saturday.
Whiting’s touchdowns were just a fraction of a 24 points the Cobbers posted in the second quarter.
Senior Wesley Waytashek and junior Tyler Swanson scored a combined four touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters for Augsburg (5-2, 4-2 MIAC). The Auggies scored the last four touchdowns of the game and 17 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to defeat the Cobbers {6-1, 4-1) who maintained their hold on second place in the conference.
Augsburg ended the game with more rushing yards (190) and passing yards (374) than Concordia (166 and 297).
The Auggies will travel the short distance to face St. Thomas (7-0, 5-0) next Saturday. Concordia-Moorhead will host Carleton.
Bethel 41, Gustavus Adolphus 21
Bethel junior running back Jesse Phenow’s 64 rushing yards and two touchdowns pushed the Royals over the Gustavus Adolphus Gusties in St. Peter, Minn.
The Royals (6-1, 4-1), ranked No. 15 by d3football.com, outpassed the Gusties (2-5, 1-4) 315-64, led by a breakout performance from sophomore quarterback Erik Peterson. He completed 27 of 29 in passes, with three touchdowns.
Bethel built a 28-7 halftime lead and extended its to 41-7 in the third quarter. Although Gustie senior quarterback Muresuk Mena scored the last two touchdowns of the game in the fourth quarter, the Gusties were not able to make a comeback and fell for the third time in a row this season.
The Gusties will travel to Collegeville, Minn., to play St. John’s next weekend while the Royals will host Hamline.
St. Olaf College 27, Carleton College 20
St. Olaf senior quarterback Dan Dobson threw for two touchdowns and 324 yards, including a 57-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Jake Schmiesing, to put the Oles past crosstown rival Carleton College at the Knights’ stadium in Northfield.
St. Olaf (6-2, 4-2) scored 17 points in the first half to seven for Carleton (3-4, 1-4). The Knights came back late in the fourth quarter, managing to score two touchdowns. The Oles recovered the Knights’ attempted onside kick to seal the victory.
The Oles’ victory extends their winning streak against Carleton to three games.
Next weekend, the Oles have their bye week and Carleton will travel to Moorhead to face Concordia.
