MIAC roundup: Oles hold off Carleton for 3rd straight win

Jack Goldstein threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Gonzalo Pirela with 9 minutes 30 seconds to play in the fourth quarter, rallying St. Olaf to a 29-26 home victory over Carleton on Saturday at Northfield.

The victory was the third in a row for St. Olaf (3-2 MIAC, 4-3 overall), and it was the 18th victory in the past 21 years over crosstown rival Carleton (0-6, 0-8).

Goldstein completed 17 of 30 passes for 324 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Khayleb Willis rushed for 145 yards, including a 67-yard touchdown run with 5:41 to go in the third quarter. That put the Oles ahead 21-20.

Emanual Williams answered with a 3-yard scoring run at the 1:56 mark of the third, his second touchdown of the game, to regain the lead for Carleton 26-21. Williams finished with 169 yards.

After Pirela’s touchdown catch put St. Olaf on top again, Carleton quarterback Christian Zaytoun drove the Knights inside the St. Olaf 20, completing passes of 47 yards and 17 yards. On fourth down, St. Olaf’s Max Karpinske broke up a pass in the end zone to end the threat.

Zaytoun completed 21 of 39 passes for 253 yards, with a touchdown and an interception.

St. John’s 41, Gustavus 17

Jackson Erdmann threw five touchdown passes, three to Will Gillach, leading St. John’s (5-1, 7-1) to the victory at Collegeville. Erdmann completed 20 of 30 passes for 320 yards, and hit Gillach with scoring passes of 14, 6 and 23 yards.

Dan Harrington caught six Erdmann throws for 159 yards and a touchdown.

Karim Ortiz scored twice on runs of a yard for Gustavus (2-3, 3-4). Ortiz gained 83 yards on 22 carries.

Concordia 42, Augsburg 20

Chad Johnson gained 153 yards on 27 rushes and scored two touchdowns as Concordia (4-1, 6-1) stayed in the MIAC title chase with the victory at Moorhead.

Augsburg (1-5, 3-5) took the lead four minutes into the game on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Quinn Frisell to Ray Guyton Jr. Concordia answered at the 5:40 mark when Blake Kragnes broke free for a 67-yard scoring run.

After an Augsburg field goal, Johnson scored twice in the second quarter on runs of a yard and 4 yarsds to put Concoria ahead for good.

The Concordia defense held Frisell to 121 yards passing on 14 completions in 31 throws. Nick Heenie, Frisell’s favorite target, caught seven passes for 114 yards.
