Minnesota United to build soccer stadium in St. Paul

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Major League Soccer is coming to St. Paul.

The Minnesota United and St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman announced Friday that the team has committed to building its nearly 20,000-seat soccer stadium at the Snelling-Midway site.

Team owner Bill McGuire says the site is centrally located between downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul and gives the team an opportunity to make top-tier professional soccer accessible to everyone. The team will privately finance the estimated $120 million project.

Seven months ago, the league and Minnesota United were focusing on Minneapolis for a new stadium. But that effort stalled and the team turned to St. Paul.

Gov. Mark Dayton has said he would support legislative action to enact a tax break for the stadium.
