New members sworn in, 31 clubs funded in Feb. 20 USG meeting

Three members were sworn in, a candidate for sophomore class senator spoke to the council and 31 clubs were funded at the Feb. 20 Undergraduate Student Government general council meeting.

New members elected

Newly elected members sworn in included spirituality committee chair Lucas Baker, neighborhood senator Spencer Polk and legislative affairs senator Adam Revoir. In the executive board, Michael Sullivan will replace Joshua Crespo-Arreola as Vice President of Public Relations.

Abby Hammer, a candidate for sophomore class senator, spoke to the council about her interest in joining USG.

“I’ve always been passionate about politics,” Hammer said. “I’d like to help the sophomore class reach their goals and their interests.”

Hammer was voted unanimously by the board into the position.

Funding requests

Internally, $55,428 was requested across 26 different clubs.

“I know that number seems like a lot, but that comes out to about just over $2,000 per club, and that’s pretty normal,” Vice President of Financial Affairs Derek Nauman said. Nauman also noted the majority of internal requests are at the beginning of the semester.

One campus-wide request of $1,000 was approved for an intramural tournament hosted by the Academic Quiz Bowl.

Four conference and competition requests were approved: $1,808.50 for Delta Sigma Pi to attend the Iowa City Lead Conference, $119.63 to the Running Club for the Valentines 5K, $250 for the Music Industry Club to attend the South by Southwest conference and $1,750 for the American Society of Civil Engineers to attend the National Concrete Bowling Ball Competition.
