In U.S. news, the House Judiciary Committee convened Monday to formally receive the investigative findings against President Trump. The committee is to vote soon, on two or more charges of abuse of power, bribery and obstruction against the Republican President. Democrats say Trump’s push to have Ukraine investigate rival jJoe Biden while at the same time withholding U.S. military aid is illegal.
In worldwide news, a volcanic island in New Zealand erupted Monday while dozens of tourists were exploring the site. The eruption killed at least five people. Police said the site was still too dangerous hours later for rescuers to search for the missing. Police said the number of missing was in the double digits but the total number was unknown.
Russia is banned from international sporting events for four years, including next summer’s Tokyo Olympics. Its involvement in a doping scandal is the cause of the ban, announced Monday by the Anti-doping agency. Russian athletes will still be able to compete if they can show they are clean. This ruling means that Russia’s flag, name and anthem will not appear at the Tokyo games.
