A 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked a major portion of Turkey and Syria early Monday, toppling hundreds of buildings and killing more than 2,300 people. Hundreds were still believed to be trapped under rubble
The quake was centered near the southeastern province of Kahramanmaras and was felt as far away as Cairo.
On the Syrian side, the area affected is currently divided in a civil war and is home to millions of refugees trying to flee the conflict.
Russian forces are keeping Ukrainian troops tied down with attacks in the easter Donbas region as Moscow assembles additional combat power there for an expected offensive in the coming weeks, Ukrainian officials said.
Intense fighting in the city of Bakhmut and the nearby towns of Soldedar and Vuhledar has continued, the Ukrainian presidential office said.
