Jim Klobuchar, a longtime Minnesota newspaper reporter and columnist and the father of U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, has died after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Klobuchar died Wednesday at the Emerald Crest care facility in Burnsville, according to the Star Tribune. He was 93.
Amy Klobuchar said that throughout his life her father was “a champion of those on the outside” and used his words to stand up for people. His career as a newspaper columnist spanned 30 years and 8,400 columns.
Jerry Burns, the colorful character who took over as the Minnesota Vikings’ head coach in a time of turmoil and led the team to three playoff berths in six seasons, also died Wednesday. He was 94.
The team announced Burns’ death. Vikings spokesman Bob Hagan said burns’ son-in-law informed him of Burns’ death Wednesday morning.
Burns helped the Green Bay Packers win the first two Super Bowls as the defensive backs coach for Vince Lombardi before joining the staff of Bud Grant as Minnesota’s offensive coordinator in 1968. Burns held that position until 1985 and became head coach in 1986, until his retirement in 1991.
