In the minds of many St. Thomas students, February means the beginning of second semester, but February also signifies a month-long celebration known as Black History Month.
This year, St. Thomas is hosting three events on campus commemorating the special month.
On Friday, Feb. 5, the Titambe West African Dance Ensemble took over Scooters from 6:30 to 11 p.m. with special appearances by student groups BESA, PULSE, Hana and ANSA. DJ Inferno kept the crowd lively with music during the event. Before the late night festivities took place, there was an open house from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Murray-Herrick Campus Center.
The Luann Dummer Center for Women will host a performance of “Daughters of Africa” on Monday. The play is at 7 p..m. in the O’Shaughnessy Educational Center auditorium.
STAR is hosting Step Afrika at 9 p.m. on Wednesday in the Brady Educational Center auditorium.
Although many students would like to attend these events, some have no knowledge of them.
“St. Thomas could do a better job of advertising,” freshman Caitlin Daly said.
Freshman Jordan Gittens, however, is pleased with St. Thomas’ efforts to show appreciation for Black History Month.
“I am surprised St. Thomas does anything at all, so it’s great,” Gittens said
