St. Thomas women’s soccer tied 0-0 Carleton Saturday for its third consecutive double overtime game, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a win.

The Tommies (3-1-1, 7-2-2 overall) outshot the Knights (4-1-1, 7-2-2 overall) 15-7 but were unable to finish despite dominating possession after the first 20 minutes.

“We played with so much fire and intensity,” sophomore defender Alex Balfour said. “I think our coaches recognized that. We’re proud overall of the game.”

In the last two games, St. Thomas tied Wartburg 0-0 and beat Bethel 2-1 in double overtime.

However, the box score doesn’t tell the full story of the game; two of the Tommies’ shots found the back of the net but were later called offsides.

Balfour said the most important takeaway from the game isn’t the score, but “the fire in your heart.”

“I think we found that this game, which we had been missing the past few, and you could just feel it on the field,” Balfour said. “It was awesome.”

Junior goalkeeper Sarah Pasternak remains atop the MIAC “goals against” leaderboard with two after the shutout.

Pasternak also felt positive about the end result, recognizing that goals don’t always come easily.

“Sometimes, that’s just soccer,” Pasternak said. “It just can’t go your way.”

The players feel there aren’t too many adjustments that need to be made for the road game against Concordia-Moorhead Tuesday, Oct. 15, but there is one thing.

Balfour and Pasternak both said, “Find the back of the net.”
