Sophomore guard Anders Nelson missed only one shot while scoring 33 points to lead the No. 4-ranked St. Thomas men’s basketball team (18-2, 14-1 MIAC) over Hamline University (5-16, 3-13 MIAC) 84-86 Wednesday at Schoenecker Arena.
“Even though I was the one scoring some points tonight, I’m looking to get my teammates looks,” Nelson said. “Tonight just happened to be the night where they left me open.”
Junior guard Burt Hedstrom had only one basket at halftime, but ended the night with 12 points and four rebounds.
“My teammates kept telling me to shoot the ball, and I just let it fly,” Hedstrom said. “I kept shooting it and it was good to see a couple drop.”
The teams rallied back and forth in the first half until the Tommies went on a seven point run with seven minutes left.
“I thought our guys were pretty patient and methodical as far as just trusting over 40 minutes that we would be able to extend the lead,” coach John Tauer said.
The Tommies play Concordia-Moorhead at Schoenecker Arena Saturday with a 1 p.m. tipoff.
