St. Thomas women’s basketball extends its winning streak to three after beating the UW-Superior Yellowjackets 78-60 Wednesday night at Schoenecker Arena.
The Tommies (3-0, 0-0 MIAC) dominated in the paint to begin the game, rattling off their first 15 points inside before junior guard Macy Hatlestad nailed a three from the corner.
“We really do like to establish lane touches, whether it be post touches or a mismatch off a drive,” coach Ruth Sinn said. “Once we established the inside game they countered, so we had to skip the ball and when we do that we are gonna get some three shots.”
The Tommies nailed nine 3-pointers on 18 attempts from the arc.
“It was nice just to get a game in and be off the practice floor,” Hatlestad said. “It was really fun with the energy in the gym to finally be in front of our home crowd, our parents, classmates, peers.”
The Yellowjackets (2-3, 0-0) outscored the Tommies 21-18 in an impressive second quarter.
“We just need to get a sense of urgency defensively and make it more difficult to score on our length,” Sinn said.
UW-Superior ended the half down 40-30 as senior guard Emily Carpenter drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Sophomore guard Amber Darge led the Tommies with 12 points at the half.
“My teammates were able to break down the defense and find me out on the arc for the three, so that was very helpful,” Darge said.
The Tommies began the second half on a 10-0 run and never looked back.
“Just continue to challenge each other every day in practice, learn from our mistakes, and take that next step,” Hatlestad said.
The Tommies travel to St. Kate’s Saturday for a 3 p.m. tipoff.
