Incoming Undergraduate Student Government President Adam Revoir was sworn in, the Minority Students in Science club was unanimously approved and the “Schauer Amendment,” which would replace the Student Organizations Chair amendment, was discussed at USG’s general council meeting on May 6.
President and new members sworn in
Departing USG President Michael Sullivan swore in his successor Revoir as president for the 2021-22 school year. Revoir then swore in new members as a group.
Revoir thanked graduating senior members of USG Michael Sullivan, Tiaryn Daniels, Josh Schauer, Abby Johnson, Mark Christainson, Bailey Keffer, Riley Kahlmeyer, Randy Koenigznecht, Liz Thull and Kaia Porter.
Minority Students in Science club
Minority Students in Science club presented and was unanimously approved to become an official USG club.
Club President Bethlehem Elias said that the club aims to uplift students of color and provide opportunities for members to advance in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) opportunities.
“The goal of this club is basically to set (minorities) up for the future and success in STEM,” Elias said.
Elias said the club aims to work with groups such as the American Red Cross, Science Museum of Minnesota and Americorps to provide volunteer opportunities to the club’s members that could lead to future positions.
The club welcomes all members of the St. Thomas community, but is geared toward minority students. The club will require members to come to at least one meeting a semester and complete a service project.
“We want to be that family component to the minority community members of this club,” Elias said.
Schauer Amendment
USG tabled a discussion on an amendment titled “The Schauer Amendment,” named after former Vice President of Administrative Affairs Josh Schauer.
The amendment would get rid of the Student Organizations Chair position and create the position of Vice President of Student Engagement.
This position would represent on-campus clubs, serve as the chair of the Student Organizations and Clubs committee and would act on behalf of USG in matters related to the Campus Life Office.
The amendment will be discussed in more depth over the summer and if passed an election for the position will be held in the fall.
Finance requests
USG unanimously approved the Catholic Medical Associations request for $1,020 for catering and a vaccine ethics event, and Hmong United Students Association’s request for $1,260 for catering and a line dancing event.
