Kellie Ring leads women’s basketball in game stunner

Several Tommie sports teams regroup from Thanksgiving weekend games and prepare for the upcoming week.

Men’s hockey

Goaltender Drew Fielding stopped 33 of 36 shots on goal, but that wasn’t enough in St. Thomas’ 3-2 loss to No. 2 Norwich (Vt.) Friday.

Despite trailing 2-0 heading after two periods, the Tommies (5-4-1 overall, 5-1-1 MIAC) tied the game in the final period. Forward Tyler Richter recorded his second career goal with assists from defender Rob Vannelli and forward Riley Horgan on the first goal, then Vannelli scored his second goal of the season with an assist from defender Willi Rose to tie the game.  111015_MIAC_roundup

However, Norwich regained control late in the game, scoring with four minutes left.

St. Thomas fell again Saturday, this time to No. 5 Plattsburgh State (N.Y.) 2-0. It was the Tommies’ first shutout in 44 games.

St. Thomas wasn’t able to capitalize on any of its three power plays against Plattsburgh. The Tommies were outshot 21-15 and goaltender Tyrone Simcoe had 19 saves.

Rose said he believes the team has learned from its mistakes and understands the effort needed to be “a top team in the country.”

“I think it’s definitely a wake-up call for sure,” Rose said.

Rose said he thought the Tommies have been successful in MIAC competition, but room for improvement remains.

“On paper, we have shown that we are dominant in the MIAC, but I think on the national standpoint, we have a lot of work to do,” Rose said. “It’s better now than in February when we don’t have any games left.”

Up next for St. Thomas is a doubleheader with Concordia-Moorhead (3-5-1, 3-3-1) this Friday and Saturday at home.

Women’s basketball

Guard Kellie Ring’s career-high eight steals helped No. 5 St. Thomas (2-1) upset No. 1 Wisconsin-Stevens Point 73-70 Sunday at home.

St. Thomas trailed 33-30 at half, but rallied in the second half by outscoring Stevens Point 43-37.

Guard Jenna Dockter sparked the Tommies with 19 points, shooting 50 percent from the field and 33 percent from beyond the arch.

Center Anna Smith recorded 10 rebounds, along with 11 points and five assists.

Ring also contributed 16 points and added four assists.

As a team, the Tommie defense converted 27 points off 22 forced turnovers.

St. Thomas begins MIAC play this week, hosting Macalester (1-2) Wednesday and traveling to Hamline (0-2) Saturday.

Women’s hockey

No. 10-ranked St. Thomas (3-3, 2-2) did not play during Thanksgiving weekend, but will face Concordia-Moorhead Friday and Saturday in Moorhead, Minn.

Forward Korinne O’Connor leads the team with six points. Forward Maria Bothwell has a team-high three goals.

Goaltender Alise Riedel has started all six games for the Tommies, allowing 11 goals on 147 shots for .935 save percentage.

Riedel mentioned the team’s “new talent” as a key to success.

“A lot of new talent came in and all of our veterans really know the systems and want to work hard and are teaching the young kids what to do,” Riedel said.
