Simple food pairs with hungry stomachs: Teas and Cheese

Sophomore entrepreneurship majors Ryan McMonigal and Nick Altmann spend their weekend evenings delivering homemade grilled cheese sandwiches and Arnold Palmers to St. Thomas students; a business known as Teas and Cheese.

Their hours of operation are Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.

McMonigal and Altmann created the business for an entrepreneurial assignment.

The duo charges $3 dollars per sandwich and $1 dollar per Arnold Palmer, and their business has not yet reached the status of needing a food permit.

“We have looked into getting a food permit, but if you sell less than $5,000 a year in Minnesota, you do not need a permit. We are well under that,” McMonigal said.

As the business expands, the two intend on hiring additional staff members to deliver the sandwiches for them.

Entrepreneurship professor David Deeds said he would advise McMonigal and Altman to look into a wider consumer base in the future.

“If you are going to expand, focus on campuses. Right now, I would go from UST to Mac (Macalester) to Hamline. All of them are nice and close,” Deeds said.
