First-year forward Jade Hill brought the St. Thomas women’s basketball team within reach, but Oral Roberts held strong in an overtime battle that resulted in a 73-67 win for the Golden Eagles Saturday at Schoenecker Arena.
The Tommies (6-15, 3-8 Summit League) last took on Oral Roberts (12-11, 7-5) on Jan. 17, falling 72-44 in a road blowout. Saturday’s loss extended the Tommies’ losing streak to seven games.
“We felt like the first time we played them, we kind of went inward. We didn’t continue to fight and be solution-based and find ways to control the game—we let them control it,” coach Ruth Sinn said.
The Tommies had two chances for game-winning baskets in the final 6 seconds of the game but were unable to find the net, sending the game into overtime—their second OT of the season.
“I told the team, ‘we’ve been in double overtime. We know what it’s like—we’re 1-0,” Sinn said.
However, the home team fell short as the Golden Eagles went 8-for-10 on free throws in overtime, sealing out the conference road win for Oral Robert.
A come-from-behind goal by first-year forward Blaine Warnert evened the score at three-a-piece with less than five minutes remaining in regulation, forcing the St. Thomas men’s hockey team into overtime and a shootout, where the Tommies lost 4-3 to No. 15 Michigan Tech Friday night at St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights.
The Tommies (2-24, 2-18 CCHA) last took on the Huskies (15-8-1, 12-5) on the road in December, falling 4-3 in another overtime battle. The game will officially be ruled as a tie, with
Michigan Tech earning an extra point in the standings. The tie breaks an eight-game home losing streak at St. Thomas Ice Arena.
“To take the No. 15 team in the country to overtime and do a shootout, that’s pretty good for our guys,” coach Rico Blasi said. “I’m proud of the way they played and I’m proud of the way they stuck together.”
The Tommies took the Huskies into a five minute 3-on-3 overtime period but were unable to find the back of the net despite a major penalty by Michigan Tech.
Graduate student goaltender Peter Thome saved 34 of 36 shots from No. 15 Michigan Tech, but the St. Thomas men’s hockey team was unable to put points on the board and lost 2-0 Saturday night at St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights.
After the Tommies (2-25, 2-19 CCHA) 4-3 overtime loss to the Huskies (16-8-1, 12-5) in Friday’s faceoff, which was officially ruled a tie, both teams came out hungry to win but St. Thomas couldn’t get one past Michigan Tech goaltender Blake Pietila, extending the Huskies 6-game win streak to seven.
“We didn’t execute tonight,” coach Rico Blasi said. “The puck was bobbled—we hit a crossbar. Their goaltender made a couple of big saves, especially on the power play… It was one of those nights where we needed to execute early, and we certainly didn’t do that.”
After a come-from-behind win on Saturday, the St. Thomas women’s hockey team fell 3-2 in a fiery game to St. Cloud State despite junior forwards Maija Almich and Allie Monrean’s one goal performance Sunday at St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights.
The Tommies (5-20-1, 3-17-1 WCHA) came into the game looking to sweep St. Cloud State (8-16-2, 3-15-2) for their second series sweep of the season, the first being against Rochester Institute of Technology in October.
“I feel like we played a more complete game,” acting head coach Bethany Brausen said. “If not, the most complete game of the season.”
