St Thomas’ men’s and women’s soccer teams both won tight games 1-0 on Saturday over Bethel University.
The men’s soccer team pulled out a win 1-0 against Bethel University with help from an early goal in the first half scored by senior forward Josh Grzesiak Saturday at South Field.
The Tommies (2-1) played an aggressive game, outshooting Bethel (2-3) 20-6 while fouling 14 times throughout the game.
“It’s always nice to get wins,” junior defenseman Jack Barry said. “Sometimes it doesn’t look pretty and today it wasn’t pretty.”
Barry contributed two shots to the Tommies shot total with Grzesiak shooting four with one of those finding the back of the Royals net.
After a scoreless first half, senior forward Megan Zickert scored a goal minutes into the second half, pushing St. Thomas to beat Bethel 1-0, and finishing the Tommies undefeated season Saturday at South Field.
This final game of the season, and in Division III continued the Tommie’s 21-game winning streak overall, and 29-game winning streak at South Field.
Zickert expressed support for her teammates on senior night.
“Of course there’s the sad feeling of not being able to play soccer again but more than anything, I’m just thrilled that we can end the season on such a high note,” Zickert said. “Going undefeated, having no goal shot against us in conference, so nothing but good things to say.”
Andrelton Simmons and Mitch Garver homered in a seven-run third inning, and rookie Alex Kirilloff went deep for the fourth time in three games as the Minnesota Twins routed the Kansas City Royals 13-4 on Sunday.
This marks the Twins’ third win out of the last four games.
Medina Spirit won the Kentucky Derby Saturday, giving trainer Bob Baffert his seventh victory… the most of any trainer in the race’s 147-year history.
Both trainer and jockey were hall-of-famers, but Medina Spirit was only sent off with 21-1 odds. Despite these odds, Medina Spirit won the race by a half-length.
