The St. Thomas football team won its season opener Saturday in its first game as a Division I team. The Tommies defeated Michigan Tech 12-to-9 in Houghton, Michigan after sophomore kicker Louis Hyde made a field goal with 59 seconds left.
After 95 weeks without competition, the Tommies battled back from a 6-point deficit in the final quarter to defeat the Division II Huskies. An interception by junior defensive back Johnson Fallah with 14 seconds left helped to secure the Tommies’ win.
The Tommies are set to face their first Division I opponent Saturday against Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
The Tommies women’s soccer team lost 3-0 to Marquette and fell to 2-3-1 on the season.
The Tommie men’s golf team finished in 17th place on the first day of the Golfweek Fall Challenge after finishing at 19-over-par in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
The team is set to finish the two day tournament today.
The Minnesota Vikings kicked off their season with a 27-24 overtime loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Vikings came back from a 21-7 second-half deficit despite having 12 penalties on the day, three coming on their opening drive, but their second-half push was not enough.
An overtime fumble by Vikings running back Dalvin Cook gave the Bengals the ball back with little time on the clock.
A 33-yard pass by Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow set up a 33-yard game-winning field goal by kicker Evan McPherson to secure the overtime win.
