MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. — The St. Thomas men’s hockey team’s 13-game win streak was snapped by conference rival St. John’s 4-1 Friday at St. Thomas Ice Arena.

Despite outshooting their rivals 34-19, the Tommies (7-1-5 MIAC, 13-4-5 overall) ended their two-month win streak after losing to the Johnnies (6-4-3 MIAC, 8-9-5 overall).

Even with losing their winning streak, the team chose to build off the loss.

“I never even use that word, ‘L,’ we’ll just start another one,” coach Jeff Boeser said.

Although the score did not reflect it, the intensity of the game remained high throughout the entire night

The Tommies outshot the Johnnies in all three periods, but struggled to get the puck in the net.

“We just have to bury our chances,” Boeser said.

Neither team scored in the first period, but the Johnnies scored two in the second. The first came from Johnnie defenseman Cole Souto off a power play and the second from defenseman Travis Brown.

Johnnie forward Brady Heppner opened the third period with a goal, but after that the Tommies controlled the puck.

Tommie forward Brett Gravelle scored off assists from Johnny Panvica and Tanner Barnes making the score 3-1, but the Johnnies topped off the win with one last goal on an empty net.

“Coming off a loss to St. John’s obviously sucks,” Gravelle said. “But we are automatically in the playoffs, and it comes down to who’s going to win in the playoffs. We just have to get a couple wins next week and get rolling.”

Only two games remain in the Tommies’ regular season play.

“We need to keep learning from our mistakes and keep moving forward as a team so that we are playing our best hockey after those two games into the playoffs,” senior captain Cullen Willox said.

St. Thomas will finish conference play with games against Hamline Feb. 15 and 16.
