Senior quarterback Cade Sexauer threw one touchdown and ran for another in the No. 23 St. Thomas football team’s 23-0 win over Stetson Saturday at O’Shaughnessy Stadium on senior day.
The Tommies’ ninth straight win brings their home regular season win streak to 37 games and gives them at least a share of the Pioneer Football League championship title. Last season, the Tommies (9-1, 7-0) defeated the Hatters (3-6, 1-5) on the road 38-7.
The 29-degree temperature and windy conditions played a factor in the Tommies’ gameplay, causing them to run the ball for much of the game. Thankfully, sophomore running back Shawn Shipman was ready to run, racking up 168 yards and a touchdown.
Shipman’s ninth touchdown of the season came on a 3-yard score with 4:47 left in the first quarter.
Sexauer did not have his most notable performance Saturday, throwing for just 123 yards and two interceptions.
However, the defense had his back, holding Stetson to no scores, just 53 yards on the ground and just 75 receiving yards. Senior defensive back Luke Glenna also had an interception in the fourth quarter that thwarted a possible Stetson scoring drive.
In the second quarter, Sexauer ran in a 1-yard TD after a 57-yard breakout rush by Shipman two plays earlier. This was Sexauer’s fifth rushing TD on the season.
Sexauer struck again in the third quarter, hitting first-year tight end Matthew Rink for a 10-yard touchdown to round out the scoring for the day.
