The University of St. Thomas’ 11-game winning streak was shut down by the South Dakota Coyotes 24-0 on Saturday at the DakotaDome in Vermillion, South Dakota, handing the Tommies their first loss of the 2023 football season.

The Tommies’ (1-1) defense buckled under the Coyotes (1-1) onslaught in the second half of the nonconference game, with South Dakota scoring 17 points in the 3rd and 4th quarters. The Tommies were only able to gain 33 yards on the ground, with 33 attempts.

Saturday’s game marked the first time St. Thomas football had lost in a shutout since 2011.

St. Thomas entered the game without starting sophomore quarterback Amari Powell, who left last week’s game against Black Hills State with an apparent leg injury. Along with Powell, junior wide receiver Andrew McElroy did not play for the second week in a row.

Freshman kicker Elliot Huether punted six times for 235 yards.

The Tommies play against Harvard University in a nonconference game on Saturday, Sept. 16, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

St. Thomas’ first conference game this season will be against Morehead State, on Saturday, Sept. 23, at home.
