Sophomore wide receiver Andrew McElroy was named Pioneer Football League Offensive Player of the Week after his three-touchdown performance helped boost the St. Thomas football team to its 49-42 home victory over San Diego on Oct. 29.
McElroy caught one touchdown in the first quarter and two in the third. He now has eight touchdowns on the season.
San Diego scored first in the game after a short touchdown run, but McElroy would find the Tommies’ answer to that score just two plays later, catching a 75-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Cade Sexauer.
His second touchdown was a 95-yard kickoff return in the third quarter.
McElroy caught his final touchdown of the game five minutes later off another deep ball from Sexauer, this one going for 57 yards.
McElroy recorded 314 all purpose yards in the game, 200 of them coming from the air.
The St. Thomas football team is one game away from winning its first conference championship at the Division I level as it takes on Stetson Saturday at O’Shaughnessy Stadium for the PFL crown.
