Riding senior All-American running back Ben Wartman’s stellar second-half performance, St. Thomas defeated Carleton 38-7 to capture its first undefeated season in school history Saturday.
Wartman rushed for 93 yards on 18 carries, and his two touchdowns not only provided the spark the Tommies needed, but also made him the school’s all-time touchdown leader with 47 career scores.
Leading 10-7 at halftime, the Tommies started the third quarter with a 7-play, 39-yard drive finishing with Wartman’s record-breaking touchdown.
The Tommies also got a second-half score from junior Greg Morse on a 1-yard sneak, and senior quarterback Matt Joshi found sophomore tight end Logan Marks in the end zone for the Tommies’ final touchdown.
St. Thomas has a regular-season bye next weekend and is guaranteed a home game in the quarterfinals.
