Junior forward Tessa Trettel’s goal in overtime led the St. Thomas women’s soccer team to win against the College of Saint Benedict 1-0 Wednesday at South Field.
Trettel’s goal was assisted by senior forward Kaley Roberts just four minutes into overtime play.
“I saw Kaley (Roberts) was going to flip it over her head, because I called for it, and then I just turned and shot it,” Trettel said. “It went off my foot nicely.”
The Tommies (11-2-2, 6-1-1 MIAC) have played five overtime games out of seven this month.
“I think our defense was outstanding,” coach Sheila McGill said. “I think that they really did a great job of staying together and covering for each other.”
The Tommies had nine shots overall, with five on goal. The Bennies (8-4-2, 5-2-1 MIAC) had four shots overall, with all of them on goal.
“I think we’ve executed everything we needed to do,” Roberts said. “When we adjusted and made solutions on the field, it obviously came in our favor and we just kept high speed and great defensive work rate.”
McGill hopes to keep her players connected for the last few regular season games.
“I think we just come every day ready to play our game and focusing on us connecting their passes and making sure that we connect quickly,” McGill said.
The Tommies travel down the street to Macalester Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. kick off.
