The Tommie women’s soccer team dominated Wisconsin-Whitewater 4-1 on the Tommies’ south campus field Saturday. Coach Sheila McGill said the team was prepared and focused on getting the win.

“We’ve been working a little bit more on our buildup and combination play,” McGill said. “We don’t want to forget what we worked on all of preseason, which is defending as a team. We have the tools to make it happen – it’s a matter of putting it together.”

The Tommies used those tools to control the first half, allowing only one goal and scoring three. Sophomore Anna Strehlow, who helped beat Wisconsin-Stout with an unassisted goal in sudden-death overtime Sept. 1, scored the first goal of the game.

Later in the first half, freshman Nicole Sheehan, assisted by senior and team captain Lexie Fisher, scored a goal and brought the score to 3-1.

Sophomore Emily Wilson said Whitewater made the second half more challenging, but St. Thomas stayed strong. In the middle of the second half, Wilson scored the fourth and final goal of the game.

“We thought they were going to change their plan of attack for the second half,” Wilson said. “They definitely did, but we still kept control.”

The Tommies will head down Cleveland Avenue to play St. Catherine’s Tuesday, Sept. 14.
