Technical glitch delays USG elections

The Undergraduate Student Government has decided to delay fall elections until 9 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15 due to technical difficulties on its website. Elections were originally scheduled to begin Tuesday.

USG discovered Tuesday afternoon that students who voted in last spring’s elections were unable to vote this fall. Even those who were able to vote Tuesday were not able to see the correct candidates.

“It’s just one of those things we’ve done so many times with the same procedures from year to year and doing the same things we’ve always done, but unfortunately technical difficulties occur,” said Corey Dahl, USG vice president of public relations. “Hopefully everything will work out tomorrow morning and we don’t have to deal with any more issues.”

IRT resolved the technical issues Tuesday afternoon. The elections will run from Wednesday morning until 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17.

“Not many people had voted when we shut down the elections and I hope this doesn’t discourage voters in the future, but in order to guarantee validity anyone who has already voted will need to re-vote starting tomorrow,” Dahl said.

Four positions are open to only freshman voters, including class president, two class senator positions and one residential senator position. Other positions on the ballot are the Executive Vice President, Elections and Credentials Committee Chair and Student Diversity Relations Chair.

  1. When has the USG election site worked the first day? Just curious. This comment is not aimed at USG who has little control over the site, but IRT. Like Corey said, this process happens every year, and these problems have not occurred only once. Additionally, the site is not easily accessed. Many people do not vote because they cannot login.
