Tommies dominant in season-opening win
In a sign of good things to come, St. Thomas opened its 2015 campaign with a dominant 62-7 win over Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Tight end Charlie Dowdle, a 2014 All-MIAC honoree, opened the 2015 season by hauling in 209 receiving yards and three scores. Cornerback Jordan Young returned an interception for a 100-yard score, and the Tommie defense held the Blugolds to 240 total yards.
Tommies defeat Eagles in home opener
St. Thomas capped off a sweep of the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 51-7 win over Wisconsin-La Crosse. Running back Jordan Roberts found the end zone three times, and the Tommie defense held the Eagles to 54 yards in the first half.
St. Thomas wins 84th Tommie-Johnnie clash
Before a Division III-record crowd of 17,327 fans, running back Jordan Roberts torched the St. John’s defense for 230 rushing yards and four touchdowns in 12th-ranked St. Thomas’ 35-14 victory. The Tommies held reigning MIAC Player of the Year, running back Sam Sura, to 74 yards and secured their first win over their longtime rival in two years.
Tommies secure eighth straight victory against Oles
St. Thomas held St. Olaf to 47 total yards, including just five on the ground, in the Tommies’ 54-0 dismantling of the Oles. Quarterback John Gould tallied four touchdowns and 171 yards in the win.
St. Thomas 55, Augsburg 6
Highlight-reel plays abounded in St. Thomas’ 55-6 win over Augsburg. Defensive lineman Ryan Winter secured a bobbling ball on an interception return for a touchdown for the Tommies’ second score of the game. Wide receiver Nick Waldvogel and defensive back Bennett Celichowski also combined for a brilliant trip to the end zone, 69-yard punt return touchdown by Celichowski. St. Thomas held Auggie quarterback Ayrton Scott, the eventual MIAC MVP, to 194 yards passing and picked him off twice.
Tommies defeat Hamline in homecoming tilt
Four passing touchdowns and 293 passing yards for quarterback John Gould lifted the No. 9-ranked St. Thomas football team to a 78-7 thumping over Hamline. The win over the Pipers marked the return of deep threat wide receiver Jack Gilliland from injury and saw the Tommies rack up nearly 600 yards of total offense.
Late surge keeps Tommies undefeated
Heading into halftime, the No. 7-ranked St. Thomas football team held its smallest first-half lead all season, but a late surge powered the Tommies to a 45-14 win over MIAC foe Bethel. St. Thomas trailed for the first time all season but took over the game in the second half. The Tommies conceded just 153 yards and a single pass completion in their win.
Tommies storm back in dominant win
Running back Jordan Roberts bested his previous season-high for total yards when he rolled up 254 in 6th-ranked St. Thomas’ 38-14 win over Concordia-Moorhead. The Tommies fell behind early but roared back to pummel the Cobbers for 552 total yards in the game. St. Thomas’ defense registered eight sacks and allowed just 179 yards on the afternoon.
Tommies overpower Carleton to clinch MIAC
Freshman running back Tucker Trettel stepped up in a big way for No. 5-ranked St. Thomas during the Tommies’ 80-3 win over Carleton. Running back Jordan Roberts was pulled from the game after the first half, and running back Jack Kaiser left the game with an injury, opening the door for Trettel to rumble for 110 yards and two touchdowns on senior day.
Tommies cap unblemished regular season
A pair of standout performances helped secure St. Thomas’ 66-9 win over Gustavus and lock up a 10-0 regular season for the Tommies. Quarterback John threw for 247 yards and scrambled for two rushing touchdowns, and running back Jordan Roberts amassed 230 yards and three scores. St. Thomas held Gustavus’ vaunted passing game to just 197 yards in the win.
NCAA playoffs first round: St. Thomas stomps La Verne in NCAA first round
Quarterback John Gould threw for 310 passing yards and two scores to lead St. Thomas to a 57-14 triumph over La Verne in the first round of the NCAA playoffs. Taking full advantage of a plethora of offensive weapons, Gould connected with tight end Charlie Dowdle for 133 yards and a touchdown in the game and found wide receiver Nick Waldvogel four times for 110 yards.
NCAA playoffs second round: St. Thomas takes Tommie-Johnnie rematch
Running back Jordan Roberts continued his dominance over the Johnnie defense to lead St. Thomas to a 38-19 triumph over St. John’s in the second round of the NCAA playoffs. Roberts scored three first-half touchdowns and pounded through the Johnnie defense for 126 yards. St. Thomas held St. John’s running back Sam Sura, a finalist for the 2015 Gagliardi Trophy, to just 55 yards on 18 carries.
NCAA playoffs quarterfinal: Tommies tower over Little Giants
St. Thomas’ stubborn defense held Wabash to just over 220 total yards in the Tommies’ 38-7 win over Wabash in the NCAA quarterfinals. St. Thomas held Wabash to 133 yards and star running back Mason Zurek managed only 72 yards. Running back Jordan Roberts was held in check, but quarterback John Gould picked up the slack, throwing for 196 yards and a touchdown in the victory.
NCAA playoffs semifinal: Roberts sends Tommies to Stagg Bowl
Running back Jordan Roberts ran for a season-high 256 yards and scored three touchdowns to push No. 4-ranked St. Thomas to a 38-17 win over Linfield in the NCAA semifinals. The win sent the Tommies to the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl on Dec. 18. The Tommies racked up 444 yards of total offense, including 389 on the ground.
