In the second round of the NCAA playoffs, the third-ranked St. Thomas football team (11-0) will host Coe College (Iowa) on Saturday at noon at Palmer Field, the NCAA announced Sunday.
Coe is ranked No. 16. The Kohawks (11-0) defeated Monmouth 21-14 at home last week.
St. Thomas beat unranked Northwestern of St. Paul 43-0 last Saturday at O’Shaughnessy Stadium.
In the Tommies’ victory over the Eagles, cornerback Michael Alada tied a St. Thomas school record with his 10th interception of the season, one of three interceptions by the Tommie defense.
The St. Thomas-Coe victor will play the winner of the St. John’s versus Wisconsin-Oshkosh game in the third round of the tournament.
Men’s basketball
The No. 10-ranked St. Thomas men’s basketball team is scheduled to play St. Scholastica at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Schoenecker Arena.
The Tommies (2-1) outscored Pacific Lutheran 80-72 in non-conference play to earn their first win of the season Friday. Junior Ryan Boll lead the Tommies with 25 points and junior Michael Hannon and sophomore Connor Bair each a had career-high scoring night. Hannon contributed 24 points while Bair racked up 15 points.
St. Thomas extended its winning streak to two, narrowly defeated Puget Sound 78-74 on Saturday. Senior Grant Schaeffer made two free throws with one second left in the game to seal the victory.
