Tiffany Sports Lounge announced they will carry on the Birthday Tuesday tradition made popular by the recently closed Wild Onion.
The newly renovated Highland Park bar and grill hosted on April 24 its inaugural Birthday Tuesday special, which gives participants a 32-ounce mug for bottomless drinks from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m., a free t-shirt and a photo with friends. The person whose birthday it is must bring four friends with them instead of the six that the Wild Onion enforced.
“To us, it’s about carrying the fun and light-hearted tradition of Birthday Tuesdays,” Tiff’s manager Brent Montpetit said.
So far Montpetit, who is a third-generation manager of Tiff’s, has relied on passing out free drink cards for Birthday Tuesdays and promoting the event on social media platforms in order to spread the word.
Montpetit said the success of Birthday Tuesdays depends on the consistency the bar shows in delivering the little details.
“Those things are what makes Birthday Tuesday special. It’s what sets them aside from any other promotional evening,” Montpetit said.
As far as how Tiff’s will accommodate for the students, Montpetit says there are two essential elements: atmosphere and service.
In its recent renovation, Tiff’s added an entire new section that includes floor-to-ceiling windows to provide better natural lighting and a more welcoming feel.
“I’m just like everybody else, I don’t want to sit in a dark, dimly lit place in the middle of the day,” Montpetit said.
St. Thomas students can breathe a sigh of relief that a tradition did not die.
“It’s a rite of passage thing, it’s kind of that unspoken rule of, ‘you go to Birthday Tuesday for your birthday,’” senior Eric Swenson said.
A few things Swenson hopes to see Tiff’s do better than the Wild Onion is managing the capacity and being able to accomodate the guests, particularly improving the bartending service.
“I don’t know how Wild Onion never figured it out, but it was hard to get a drink on Tuesdays compared to other bars,” Swenson said.
Nevertheless, Montpetit will relish the opportunity to offer something different and keep providing local students with a place to have a good time.
“I’ve been given an opportunity to be creative here at Tiffany’s to sort of help my dad and my grandfather to carry on this legacy. At the same time, to keep abreast with changing times is super exciting,” Montpetit said.
