Tommies, Tigers play to scoreless tie

The St. Thomas men’s soccer team couldn’t overcome a 0-0 tie with two overtime periods against the Tigers of Colorado College Sunday in the second of their two Tommie Classic matches.

Six yellow cards — three to each team — made for an aggressive and defensive game. The Tommies could only generate four shots on goal, and held their opponent to just two shots on goal.

Tyler Oliver, a junior transfer from Eastern Illinois University, said it was a good opportunity for the team to work on their chemistry.

“It’s the first time I’ve been playing with these guys,” said Oliver. “So it’s a lot of building chemistry going forward and figuring out how each other like to play.”

Oliver hopes to add on to what he already considers a great team.

“I think I can add an extra level to the attack, a little bit of creativity and a bit of pace in behind,” said Oliver. “And a knack for scoring goals helps.”

Impressive defensive efforts from the two Tommie center backs Johnny Mulvahill and senior Shane Marshall helped maintain the shutout. Senior and center defender Jack McCormick was a defensive wall for the Tigers, making stop after stop and winning nearly every head-to-head ball, especially in the air.

“It was nice to get off to a good start,” Oliver said. “This team is good. We will find goals going forward.”

The Tommies played their second game against the Tigers after winning their first game on Friday against Buena Vista University 5-1.

Three teams were invited to play in the Tommie Classic: Buena Vista University, Colorado College and Concordia College. Both the Tommies and Tigers went 1-0-1 for the weekend.
