The fourth undergraduate student government council meeting was held Oct. 19.
Four members were sworn during the council meeting. Transfer senator and junior Anna Rauzi; Commuter Senator and first-year student Abby Gureski; and Union Park Neighborhood senator and sophomore Jacob Fette.
Senior Alex Nasser was sworn in as Sustainability Committee Chair. Nasser ran against first-year students Aria St. James and Teja Bhimavarupu.
Nasser is an environmental studies and biology major. He is also the president of Sustainability club on campus. Nasser said one of his goals for this term is to bring composting to the forefront of St. Thomas’ sustainability initiatives.
Two new clubs were created: Tommie Strength and the Catholic Medical Association.
Junior Jordan Dick, sophomore Logan Scholla and sophomore class president Jordy Chavez-Estrada presented the Tommie Strength club to the council.
“We just wanted to create camaraderie around the gym and just educate people,” Scholla said, “(and) make sure we provide the resources for them to achieve their goals.”
Dick added that the club will function as an educational platform for students, where they can learn about best workout practices from proper form to nutrition.
Junior Anne LoCoco is president of the Catholic Medical Association club. LoCoco said she wanted to create an interdisciplinary club that combined aspects of pre-health and religious clubs.
USG also began a new internal program called “Council Member of the Week.” President Ryan Foster said the program will recognize the work and ideas members bring to the council.
Freshman class senator Michael Sullivan was the first to be named Council Member of the Week. Sullivan serves on the Academic Committee. He is working on making tutors easily accessible for students and creating incentives for using tutor and library resources.
