The Twin Cities metro area will be at risk for fast-moving storm lines that have the potential to bring high winds and possible tornadoes, according to an email from the Department of Public Safety to the St. Thomas community this afternoon.

The email warned that some wind gusts could exceed 80 mph and the backside of the storm will bring rain and then ice, creating dangerous conditions.

“If possible, remain in the lower levels of your residence or office during the windstorm, and avoid windows,” the email said. “Use caution if you must drive.”

The university will monitor the weather and will follow Class Cancellation and University Closure Guidelines, according to the email from Public Safety.

Residence Life sent an email shortly after warning residents about the storm and provided residents with information on where to shelter from the storm in the event of a Tornado or High Wind warning. The locations are as follows:

Brady: lower level (common area, computer lab, hallways)

Grace: lower level

Ireland: lower level

Murray: lower level of Murray-Herrick by AFROTC, Veterans Center, and Campus Store

Morrison: R3 of parking garage

Flynn: R3 of parking garage

Mid-Campus Houses & Apartments: lower level and interior hallway

Tommie East: lowest level of parking garage

Tommie North: parking garage

The Department of Public Safety also included the National Weather Service and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety as emergency weather resources.
