USG elections kick off with candidate forum

Candidates for the Undergraduate Student Government Executive Board election made their debuts at a public debate on Tuesday over Convo Hour in Scooter’s.

Positions on the board include student body president, executive vice president, vice president of financial affairs, vice president of academic affairs, vice president of administrative affairs, vice president of public relations and vice president of diversity.

Candidates for student body president are Ryan Foster and Bobby Martin.

Foster, a junior majoring in human resources and management, stressed unification and communication as the main pillars of his platform.

“You can’t have unification without communication,” Foster said.

Foster is currently serving as the vice president of administrative affairs for USG. He also is an operations manager and residential advisor on South Campus.

Bobby Martin is also a junior, majoring in political science and information systems. He currently serves as the USG vice president of public relations.

Martin emphasized the use of technology to increase transparency between USG and the rest of the school, through the use of online forms and mass email marketing.

“I want to make sure we stay just as transparent if not more transparent than last year,” Martin said. “I want to make sure students understand their power within the university.”

Candidates for executive vice president include juniors Nick Hable and Sarah Schuler.

Hable, a biochemistry major who is currently serving as the junior class senator, believes he would bring a unique perspective to the executive board as a science major.

“Science majors don’t know about student government,” Hable said. “We’re missing the whole south campus.”

Schuler, a operations and supply chain management major, is currently the executive vice president. Schuler stressed the importance of servant leadership.

“Servant leadership is whatever you guys want,” Schuler said. “I try to bring that to the student government, everything that you want passed and not necessarily my own goals.”

Candidates for vice president of academic affairs include first-year Joshua Crespo and junior JB Stender.

Candidates for vice president of administrative affairs include first-years Jacob Fette and Logan Monahan.

Candidates for vice president of diversity include sophomore Fatoumata Jaiteh and junior Tobias Knight.

Sophomore Jordan Hanson is currently the sole candidate for vice president of financial affairs and sophomore Shonni Kreng is the sole candidate for vice president for public relations.
